EIFS stands for exterior insulated finish systems, commonly referred to as synthetic stucco. It is a multi-layer exterior wall system including three steps. After a vapour barrier has been applied, a foam insulation board is secured to the exterior wall surface with a cement based adhesive, applied with a trowel containing teeth to create many continuous grooves to allow any unwanted moisture that enters the wall system to escape. The same cement adhesive is applied to the front surface of the styrophome with a reinforced fibre glass mesh for strength. The finishing stage includes a primer and a textured finish coat.
Exterior stucco first originated in European construction, when contractors and builders found it an efficient repair choice for buildings that had been damaged during World War II. It began to gain popularity in the 1980's in North America for commercial and residential buildings. Of late, it has been a popular finish choice for many commercial buildings in P.E.I. construction and is gaining popularity.
